The "English Canal". An English company, the Gellivare Company Limited, founded in 1863, was supposed to build a canal bypassing the rapids in Heden and Edefores to make the Lule river useable for ore transportation.

The construction of the canal started in 1865 with a workforce of close to 200 men. Lack of funding, however, brought a premature end to the project. The parts of the canal that still exist today bear witness to the dimension of the project.
