The Oats Warehouse was part of a central military storage facility and was one part of a plan ensuring the supply for the armies during wartime. The Oats Warehouse had the task of providing all the units in upper Norrland with oats for their horses and the mill at the military supply depot with grain, wheat and rye. At about the same time three additional oats warehouses where being built in other parts of the country - in Östersund, Karlsborg and Hässleholm.
The construction of the central military supply depot in Boden started in 1911 and was executed in three stages. It was completed in 1918. The impressive Oats Warehouse was built during the first stage, 1911-1912. In May 1987 the Oats Warehouse was converted into a military storehouse. All the machinery and, except for two, all the grain bins had to be taken out.
During the summer of 2010 the The Oats Warehouse was reopened as an art centre. The art centre displayed three major exhibitions - Bodenskolan (The Boden school), Till häst (Mount up) and Ryssen kommer (the russians are coming).
The art centre is now closed for the public but the work sor a new exhibition in the future continues.
