Boden is located in Sweden's northernmost region, about 110 km below the Arctic Circle and right on the path into the land of the midnight sun. Boden has 27 500 inhabitants. The municipalitys area comprises approximately 4 600 sq. km.
Boden has the charm and all the advantages of a small town where almost everything is close by and where you can enjoy good service. An abundance of activities, a rich cultural offer, many sights and high-quality craftsmanship complete the picture.
Boden's characteristic features are the surrounding mountains, the river and the unique outdoor recreational area Björknäs, which is located beautifully at the waterside and yet only a few hundred metres from Boden's centre. The Björknäs area offers a variety of activities and sights: family camping, a heated outdoor pool, a sports ground with, among other things, ice rink, tennis courts and football pitches; but in the area you also find the Överluleå Church and adjoining church cottages, the Old Court House, Boden's oldest school and the Norrbottensgårdarna, a group of old buildings in typical Norbottten style.
For those fond of bathing Boden is the ideal place to be: a huge heated outdoor pool at Bodens Camping and Bath, the aqua park - NordPoolen, which is well-known all over Sweden, as well as a couple of bathing places with sandy beaches in the area.
Golf, fishing, horseback riding, hunting, trotting, canoeing and lots of exciting adventure facilities are further incentives for a visit. Of course you can also just take a stroll in the beautiful environment or go on sight-sightseeing tours. But if you are looking for high-paced entertainment - then the Western Farm with its speedy stunt shows is the right place to go. Meet cowboys, gunmen and saloon girls and take part in Western-style activities.
During wintertime you find a wide range of skiing opportunities, downhill and cross-country skiing, illuminated ski tracks, and slalom slopes; you can go on a snowmobile safari, take part in dog sled riding or have a go at ice fishing. Of course you can also forget all about winter in the aqua park - Nordpoolen.
From the beginning of the 20th century Boden has developed into Sweden's largest and most important military town. For a long time Boden's military fortifications were top secret and closed to the public. Many had heard about Rödbergsfortet (the "Rödberg Fortress"), which was built right into a mountain, blasted into the mountain rock, but only a few had actually had a chance to see it from the inside. Now you can visit Rödbergsfortet and see the entire installation. If you are interested in military history you should not miss the Armour museum and the Defence museum.
